One of the best ways to grow as a Christian is through service. When we humble ourselves and serve we follow Jesus' example.
From Jesus
Matthew 4: 10
Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"
Matthew 6: 24
“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
Matthew 20: 24-28
When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Luke 12: 35-38
“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night.

Romans 7: 4-6
So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
Romans 12: 1-8
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Galatians 5: 13
You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.
Philippians 2: 5-10
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. Who, being in very nature God,did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross! Ephesians 4:7-16

1Corinthians 12: 12-31
The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 1Corinthians 14: 1-5
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. 1Corinthians 14:12
So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.
1Peter 2:4-10
As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Exodus 19:3

Practical Application
As Christians we don't get to decide whether or not we want to serve God. To become a Christian is to become a servant of God. Each person who wants to become mature in Christ will find their place to serve. The best way to find out where you serve the best is just to experiment. Just try different things. If you don't feel it's a good fit for you, then try something else. Pray about it. Take some initiative.
I believe the primary place we serve God is through the local church. The church is the body of Christ, and each Christian finds their part in Christ's body as together we build up his church. If you want to mature as a Christian you will have to get involved and stop viewing church as a place to "go" and start seeing church as a place to "do."
